Sony
None of the studios that have suffered some of the consequences of Sony’s layoff of 900 PlayStation employees have condoned this, but none have made public statements outside of individual employees sharing their grief and frustration on social media. There are almost no
However, Insomniac Games has also been affected by the layoffs and has issued a public statement regarding the layoffs. on your main Twitter account, something other big-name developers like Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games haven’t done. Neither account has posted since February 26th and 27th, respectively, and neither account has posted about the layoffs.
But Insomniac uses unusually sharp language to express how bad these firings are. Here’s what they said:
“Like SIE and several other teams at PlayStation Studio, Insomniac Games was also affected by yesterday’s layoffs. There are not enough words to express how we feel about it. is a solemn and unprecedented moment for our studio.”
“We are focusing our energies on supporting everyone affected during this difficult time.” We have the talent. We are very grateful to them and will miss them.”
Again, this is pretty significant given the lack of audio from other studios, and while the words “solemn and unprecedented” seem sharp and brandished against Sony, That’s natural. This message would never have gotten out into the world without management approval, so unlike the Bungie layoffs a few months ago that involved a corporate statement and public outrage at Bungie management, this is happening here at Insomniac. That doesn’t seem to be the case.
This should be extremely frustrating since Insomniac just released Spider-Man 2 after releasing Spider-Man 1, the biggest exclusive hit of the PS4 generation. Now, Sony boasted that Spider-Man 2 had the fastest-selling release date in history, selling 2.5 million copies on release day alone. And he just sold over 10 million copies of Spider-Man 2, which was announced just two weeks ago.
The problem, of course, is that Sony’s most successful studio, fresh off a blockbuster, still How can anyone in the company feel safe in any position when layoffs are occurring?
On Sony’s side, despite Spider-Man 2’s performance, Insomniac’s budget may have become too big. Hacked documents revealed that Spider-Man 2 cost him $300 million to make. This is not only three times his size and length and of course the selling price, but also three times his first game’s budget. Therefore, these inflated costs may be unsustainable. However, even if and Considering these costs, the game needed 7.2 million units to break even, but after a few months it has already reached 10 million units. Again, what is the actual justification?
This statement makes Insomniac angry, and with good reason. It’s clear that the industry is struggling, but it’s made worse by the people who are struggling. clearly Even if you are successful and produce hits, you still get fired. The industry is cracking.
