Spotify already offers a variety of ways for listeners to find the music they want to listen to on the platform. Now, a new AI tool has been added that can automatically compile playlists based on text strings entered by users.
The company has launched a beta version of a feature it calls AI Playlists, first available to users in the UK and Australia. According to Spotify, this new tool allows you to “turn your most creative ideas into playlists.”

Examples of AI playlist prompts listed by Spotify include: “Music that will help you relax during allergy season” “A playlist that will make you feel like the main character” “Sad music to paint a picture of a dying flower”. “We’re getting ready with the girls. Create an intense playlist to get the dance floor going.” and “Tracks to ride off into the sunset.”
Spotify said its AI playlists will not generate results for non-music-related prompts, such as current events or specific brands. Additionally, the company said it has taken steps to block “offensive prompts.”
According to Spotify, AI playlists can feature prompts that reference locations, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, emojis, and more. The company added that the “most successful” playlists are generated from prompts that “combine genres, moods, artists, or decades.” Users can also revise and improve their playlists by telling the AI playlist more specifically what they’re looking for (i.e., “more pop” or “less cheerful”).
The beta version of AI Playlists will initially be available to Premium subscribers in the UK and Australia on the Android and iOS apps. “We will continue to iterate on this new feature to best serve our listeners in the coming months,” the company said.
