Denis Villeneuve makes a promise to Dune fans: He will only move forward with making a third film based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, but if it turns out to be Dune Part 2. ” If only I knew it was better than that. ” That’s a lofty goal considering what a sensation the sequel was. A hit with critics and audiences alike, Villeneuve’s blockbuster has eclipsed his $500 million mark at the box office worldwide, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon.
“I did both movies back to back. It absolutely made sense to me,” Villeneuve said recently. told Empire magazine When the possibility of a third “Dune” arose. “I felt it was a good idea to move on right after ‘Part One.’ We were already doing design, writing, etc. But it was like I was on Arrakis nonstop for six years.” That also means that I think it’s healthy to step back a little bit. First, make sure you have a strong script. What you want to avoid is not having anything prepared. I didn’t, but now I feel like it could be dangerous because of that enthusiasm. I need to make sure all my ideas are on paper.”
“If you’re going to go back in time, it needs to be realistic and it needs to be relevant. If we were to do ‘Dune Messiah,’ [it’s] “Because it’s going to be better than ‘Part 2,'” he added. “If not, I won’t do it.”
Villeneuve has long been vocal about his interest in making a third Dune movie. Before the release of Dune: Part 2, the director told fans that a script based on Dune Messiah was nearing completion. He also told reporters that he believes “Part 2” is a better movie than “Part 1,” so perhaps the same will be true for “Part 3.”
“For me, this movie is much better than ‘Part 1,'” Villeneuve said of the second film. “There’s something more vivid there. There’s a relationship with the characters. I reached an intensity and quality of emotion that I couldn’t reach in ‘Part 1’ that I was able to reach in ‘Part 2.’ I was about to. I’m not saying this movie is perfect, but I’m much more satisfied with Part 2 than I was with Part 1. ”
Many of Villeneuve’s Dune cast members have already expressed interest in appearing in the third film. The director confirmed that Florence Pugh and Léa Seydoux had small roles in Part 2, but their presence would be greatly expanded in a potential third film.
“Will I be depressed? Absolutely,” Zendaya added to Fandango about making the new Dune movie. “Every time Dennis calls, it’s a yes from me. I can’t wait to see what happens. When I started ‘Messiah,’ I thought, ‘Oh, we’re still filming the first movie.’ Let’s go back to the beginning. ” It’s a lot to absorb, but you won’t find yourself in better hands with as much care and love as Dennis. ”
Dune: Part 2 continues to be shown in theaters across the United States from Warner Bros.
