Samsung has launched the Galaxy S24 lineup in China, which is equipped with Galaxy AI. However, there is a catch. Unlike other regions where Google’s Gemini AI model powers the AI capabilities of Galaxy S24 phones, China’s Galaxy S24’s Galaxy AI is powered by Baidu’s Ernie, as reported by CNBC.
Samsung’s China division has partnered with Baidu’s AI Cloud to incorporate Ernie LLM into the new Galaxy S24 series.
“With Ernie’s understanding and generation capabilities, the upgraded Samsung Note Assistant can translate content or summarize long content into a clear and intelligently organized format with the click of a button,” said Samsung Electronics. China and Baidu said in a statement to CNBC.
The Chinese version of the Galaxy S24 phone has many of the same features as the US version, including real-time call translation, transcription helper, and photo assistant. The Ernie LLM feature also helps users translate and summarize text and transcribe audio in multiple languages through the Notes Assistant feature.
Samsung is also introducing a feature similar to Google’s “Circle to Search” that allows Chinese users to search for text, images, or videos through hand gestures, with search results provided by Baidu.
This move is likely due to Google’s limited presence in China. Android devices sold in China do not come with Google apps or services. Additionally, the Chinese government supports homegrown AI companies, with Chinese search giant Baidu making Erniebot publicly available in August last year.
