Amazon’s Ring will increase the price of its cheapest Basic subscription, the company announced, following similar price hikes by Google and others. FAQ can be seen in The Verge. As of March 11th, it costs $4 to $5 per month (or $40 to $50 per year), a 25% increase.
Ring last increased the price of its basic plan in 2012. June 2022 ($3 to $4 per month) We’ve also added several features, including additional cloud storage, bulk downloads of large amounts of videos, and the ability to receive exclusive discounts on future Ring products. Although this time the price has increased without adding any additional benefits.
While it only adds up to a few more cups of Starbucks flat white coffee per year, for some users, the increase could be more significant. The basic plan only covers one camera, and each camera is required for video storage and recording. That said, users with more than one camera may be better off with the Ring Protect Plus plan (which covers all your Ring doorbells and home cameras in one place). That’s exactly double the cost: $10 per month or $100 per year. (If you don’t have a plan, you can only view live streams and receive motion alerts.)
Ring’s move follows Google’s lead. We’ve increased the price of our cheapest Nest Aware plan Last September, it went from $6 to $8 a month ($60 to $80 a year), and this option covers all cameras on your account. This makes Google’s options more suitable for new users who haven’t purchased any hardware.
If you want to save even more money, both Blink and Wyze offer single-camera cloud plans for $3 per month, and both also support local storage. Another option is to purchase a device that supports Apple HomeKit Secure Video if you have an iCloud+ subscription.
