Washington police are working with the Secret Service and other relevant authorities to investigate the incident.
A man self-immolated outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, according to US emergency services.
The incident occurred at around 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) on Sunday.
U.S. Secret Service agents extinguished the blaze before the man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the city’s Fire Department reported.
Later, U.S. media quoted a U.S. Air Force spokesperson as saying that the man was an active-duty airman.
Washington police are currently working with the Secret Service and other relevant authorities in the investigation.
Police in the U.S. capital said in a statement that the incident occurred “around 1 p.m. in the 3500 block of International Drive, N.W.” ” he said. A fire broke out in front of the embassy in the area. ”
The statement added that an “adult male” was subsequently taken to hospital where he remains in “serious condition.”
A video has been published on social media that purports to show a man being burned while shouting “Liberate Palestine,” according to US media reports.
A bomb squad was dispatched to the scene due to concerns about a suspicious vehicle that may be associated with this person.
This was subsequently declared safe as no harmful substances were detected.
No embassy staff were injured in the incident, an embassy spokesperson told The New York Times.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the man was not known to embassy staff.
This is not the first time someone has self-immolated in front of the Israeli diplomatic mission to the United States.
Police said protesters used gasoline and a Palestinian flag was found at the scene.
