One month into B.C.’s respiratory disease vaccination campaign, COVID-19 infection rates in the province appear to be decreasing.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix held a press conference Friday to mark one month since the first rollout of this season’s influenza and COVID-19 vaccination campaigns. The pair held regular press conferences during the height of the pandemic, but their frequency has decreased considerably.
“The peak of COVID-19 was pretty early on, but now it’s leveling off and starting to go down,” Dr. Henry said. “That means test positivity rates, COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, etc. , we can see that it has decreased over the past two weeks from its peak in early October.
Dr Henry said 847,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered so far, along with 1.07 million doses of influenza vaccines. Last year, British Columbia saw a record increase in flu vaccinations, with 1.775 million doses administered.
Dix said B.C. has ordered 2.8 million COVID-19 vaccines and 2.3 million influenza vaccines this year.
Dr. Henry noted that older people continue to be most at risk from respiratory viruses, with people over 60 accounting for the majority of hospitalizations for coronavirus and influenza.
Although the spread of the virus has decreased over the past two weeks, Dr. Henry urged people to get the latest coronavirus vaccination to best protect themselves and the rest of the population.
