Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17 is set to be a major showcase of generative AI on smartphones. While the new Galaxy S24 phones will likely feature upgraded hardware such as higher-resolution cameras and brighter displays, the big focus this year seems to be on software, especially Samsung’s new AI efforts.
Samsung recently announced Galaxy AI, which it describes as a “comprehensive mobile AI experience” for Galaxy devices. Although details are not yet clear, Samsung says Galaxy AI will have enhanced features related to communication, productivity, and creativity when it launches in early 2024.
This timing suggests that Galaxy AI will debut on the Galaxy S24 line, offering AI enhancements missing from previous Galaxy phones. Samsung previously unveiled one of its Galaxy AI features called AI Live Translate Call, which provides real-time voice and text translation during calls through Samsung’s native calling app. This on-device processing means translations are done privately, as opposed to cloud-based solutions.
Although AI Live Translate Call is focused on privacy, some Galaxy AI features may rely on the cloud. However, processing certain tasks locally when possible is consistent with Samsung’s privacy goals. Galaxy AI looks reminiscent of Samsung’s six-year-old digital assistant, his Bixby, but the features could be a notch higher. Bixby will likely continue to manage his Samsung Connected Home devices, while Galaxy AI will be the face of his AI on his Galaxy phone.
New silicon, like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that will power the Galaxy S24 models sold in the US and Samsung’s Exynos 2400 overseas, will provide ample AI capabilities. Both chips offer significant AI performance improvements over previous generations, making them ideally suited for on-device execution of Galaxy AI features.
Qualcomm has already teased the AI aptitude of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, demonstrating how the chip can generate notes from calls. The Exynos 2400 similarly promises big advances with AI, which Samsung says will enable innovations such as text-to-image generation. No matter which processor ends up in his particular Galaxy S24 model, the AI capabilities should be impressive.
Considering Qualcomm’s AI phone demo and Samsung’s Exynos 2400 text-to-image claims, generative AI could be a potent trick for Galaxy AI. The technology behind chatbots, such as ChatGPT, allows you to create text, images, videos, and more from prompts. Samsung is likely to build user-friendly generative AI directly into the Galaxy S24 camera, messaging, and other apps.
With Apple reportedly planning generative AI in future products, Samsung has an incentive to beat its biggest rival with the debut of influential on-device generative AI. We’ll have to wait for Galaxy Unpacked 2024 to find out exactly how Samsung will leverage its new AI power.
