Officials said in a media release that fentanyl is not only prevalent, but also increasingly dangerous.
“Many of these overdoses appear to be related to the dangerous practice of cutting fentanyl,” an Alberta RCMP media release said. “To create a cheaper high, fentanyl is mixed with other substances that are more easily and cheaply available. A side effect of this mixing is that it reduces the effectiveness of naloxone, and even if it is effective, But that means more doses are needed to save someone’s life.”
Here are some tips to keep yourself and others safe when using illegal drugs:
- Please avoid using it alone.
- Use it when you’re on the phone with someone you trust to check on you or get help in case of an overdose.
- Know the signs and symptoms of poisoning/overdose and call 911 for instructions and assistance.
- Carry a naloxone kit, Know how to use it to deal with suspected opioid addiction/overdose.
- Consider using the Digital Overdose Response System app when taking drugs.
