Floyd’s death in 2020 sparked protests around the world against police brutality and racism.
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of killing George Floyd, was stabbed and seriously injured, US media reported.
Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate Friday at a federal correctional facility in Tucson, Arizona, the Associated Press, The New York Times and ABC News, citing anonymous sources, said.
ABC News, citing a person familiar with the situation, said Chauvin is in “stable” condition and is expected to survive.
The Federal Correctional Facility in Tucson did not respond to a request for comment.
Floyd’s death in 2020 sparked mass protests against police brutality and racism, with chants of “I can’t breathe” rallied for change in the United States and many other countries.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate was stabbed at a Tucson prison, without releasing the inmate’s name, but that no other inmates or prison staff were injured.
Chauvin, who was filmed kneeling on the black man’s neck for more than nine minutes, was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in April 2021 and sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison.
In June 2022, Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years in prison for violating Floyd’s civil rights in a separate case.
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal of Chauvin, who was convicted of second-degree murder.
Chauvin’s lawyers had argued that pretrial publicity denied him his right to a fair trial and could jeopardize public safety if he was acquitted.
Three other former police officers at the scene of Floyd’s death were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three years to 57 months.
In June, the U.S. Department of Justice investigated the Minneapolis Police Department and found that officers frequently engaged in violent and racist behavior “including gratuitous and deadly force.”
