This iconic historical landmark was once a vast tropical garden mansion named ‘Villa Marie’ by the great-grandson of Singapore’s famous philanthropist, the late Mr Tan Tock Seng. Built in the 1940s, it remained untouched for a long time while the surrounding area developed with high-rise buildings. The contrast between Villa Marie’s attractive proportions and modern surroundings could not be more obvious. The low-rise structure, intimate scale, transition spaces between indoor and outdoor areas, the interior complemented by elegant high arches, the use of warm materials and, most importantly, the lush greenery of the courtyard are all part of the hotel provides inspiration for the design.

Reflecting this unique past, the entire building has been designed as vertically stacked villas, with each garden an extension of the landscape. These vertically stacked ‘sky villas’ create a unique architecture deeply rooted in Singapore’s tropical greenery. Architectural elements such as high ceilings, verandas, lush courtyards, arches and terracotta roof tiles have been reinterpreted in the new structure. This reference not only connects architecture to its unique context, but also rediscovers the wisdom of past climate responses that are still very relevant today.

The hotel consists of five major parts. Two- and three-storey sky gardens are stacked on alternating floors, creating an interesting play on the façade.
- Front desk and lounge on the 1st and 2nd floors,
- Office at the back of the 3rd floor,
- 4th/5th place hotel amenities,
- Rooms 8-20 and rooftop amenities.
Moving to the hotel space, the verticality of space is explored. The main common spaces on the 4th and 5th floors are staggered and spatially connected. This elevated space is filled with lush greenery, creating a special garden space for visitors. When combined with softly draped high-level planters, you can experience a deep transformation from a busy cityscape to a lush oasis. The mirrored ceiling reflects the greenery below, creating an open garden space where you can feel the sky.

From the 8th floor onwards, multiple sky gardens connect with adjoining rooms, allowing guests to step out of their balconies and immerse themselves directly into the tropical gardens. The elevated common spaces on the rooftop terrace level express the duality of Singapore’s urban landscape. On one side, Orchard Road offers a dynamic landscape of shopping belts. On the other side lies the quietness of the low-rise Nasim Hill area. The lap pool slightly cantilevers out from the entire building and serves as a focal point from which these contrasting cityscapes can be enjoyed.

The hotel has been designed so that the building’s windows avoid east and west directions, minimizing heat and sun glare. The sky terrace allows for porosity and allows natural ventilation to large parts of the building. The facade enclosure covers the east and west sides of the building structure with cast aluminum panels. These slightly concave panels provide a double skin envelope and are designed to reduce solar heat gain. Across the facade, the guest room balconies are lined with steel mesh screens. These screens, reminiscent of window screens in traditional shophouse typologies, act as shading devices and ensure privacy for the occupants.
