Air Canada, the country’s largest airline, has revised its checked baggage policies and increased prices for Economy Basic and Standard Flyers.
Airlines announced The changes took effect Wednesday and will apply to people who purchase fares on or after February 28, 2024 for domestic flights, flights between Canada and the United States, and flights between North America and Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Basic and Standard fare customers traveling domestically or between Canada and the U.S. can expect to pay $35 to $40 for their first checked bag and $50 to $60 for their second checked bag.
If you purchase a Comfort fare and a Flex fare on the same flight, the first bag is checked in for free, but the second bag costs $50 to $60. With Latitude fares, the first two pieces of baggage are checked in free of charge.

Checked baggage fees for other international trips remain unchanged. Economy Basic and Aeroplan Standard Rewards have a first bag fee of $75 and a second bag fee of $100. As always, baggage allowance depends on your flight route and ticket issue date.
These amounts are before taxes and are the same whether you pay in US or Canadian dollars.

Trend in baggage fee increases
Air Canada changed its checked baggage fees less than two weeks after WestJet.
As of February 15th, prepaid baggage With WestJet, the first checked bag costs $35 to $42, and the second checked bag costs $55 to $65. However, if you choose self-service check-in, you’ll pay $45 to $54 for your first checked bag and $65 to $77 for your second bag.
Checking in at the airport is even more expensive, with fees ranging from $55 to $65 for the first checked bag and $75 to $89 for the second checked bag.
