introduction
AI-enhanced creative workflows: generative techniques
The text-to-image diffusion model is an accessible way for artists, architects, and designers to experiment with artificial intelligence. MidJourney is one of the platforms where we can use our imagination and explore and test design ideas in a fraction of the time it takes traditional drawing, modeling and rendering. Joshua Vermillion will lead this his MidJourney workshop, highlighting how to integrate this platform into his existing creative workflow. AI does not replace other design tools. This program is designed to leverage MidJourney to enhance your design workflow.
Workshop scope:
This fast-paced workshop covers various techniques for integrating AI into your design workflow. AI tools can connect and extend to a variety of analog and digital mediums. Their generative abilities are particularly adept at enhancing the early stages of the creative process. There is no “one way” to use AI, so we’ll cover a variety of techniques that take advantage of the multimodal aspects of large language models that can allow for different inputs and produce multiple results.
One of the values of using a diffusion model like MidJourney is its multimodal capabilities. You can input words, images, and photos to generate new output. The first session of this workshop will focus on techniques for exchanging words and images: text-to-image, image-to-text, and image-to-image. The second session will discuss new techniques, including defining styles using the Style Tuner and a new open source experimental tool for generating his 3D point clouds from images (image-to-3d).
Both sessions will include a combination of demonstrations, followed by hands-on individual design challenges. Participants are encouraged to provide their own process sketches, models, and photo examples to use throughout the workshop.
the purpose
By the end of this workshop, participants will have demonstrated and practiced several MidJourney techniques for developing design ideas and producing visually compelling design images. It will be. Along the way, you’ll learn about MidJourney’s many settings that help you iterate on ideas and integrate them into your creative process. Ultimately, everyone will come up with different ways to incorporate AI into the design process to enhance creative efforts.
program:
Session 1: March 30th (Sat)
- Text-to-image techniques: MadLibs style descriptive text
- Techniques for converting images to text: Reverse engineering images using the Describe command
- Image-to-image techniques: Combine and blend images and effects
- Individual challenge: combination of techniques
Session 2: Sundays in March The 31st
- Discussion and sharing of design challenge results
- Style-to-image techniques: Find and refine latent space using the style tuner
- Image-to-model techniques: Depth mapping tools that generate 3D point clouds from 2D images
- Team Challenge: Sharing Techniques
software:
- MidJourney (subscription required, standard membership recommended)
- Create an account and subscription with midjourney.com
- Discord (required) Click here to download
- Discord is free on Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android OS.Mid journey runs through
- Although the course content focuses on Midjourney, there is no “one size fits all” AI tool. Dall-E + Chat GPT
- If you prefer these, much of the course content can be used as an alternative. We recommend a free OpenAI account.
Teacher:
Joshua Vermillion
Joshua Vermillion He is a tenured associate professor in the UNLV School of Architecture. Having built a multi-year career exploring, developing and implementing ‘digital craft’, his efforts in research, pedagogy and practice fall primarily into three categories: Digital information as material (digital fabrication tools and techniques). Digital information as a method (location technology, response systems, robotics). Joshua has published and presented peer-reviewed research and design work around the world while continuing to experiment with new design technologies such as his AI diffusion models such as MidJourney and Stable Diffusion.
