There was an unprecedented acquisition of a first-round pick heading into the 2023 NHL trade deadline.
Almost exactly a year ago, 12 picks were traded in a 32-day period.
Vancouver GM Patrick Allvin has been on both sides of the deal regarding first-rounders, acquiring Bo Horvat from the New York Islanders on January 30th and signing Phillip to Detroit on March 1st. – Traded with Hronek.
Why a history class?
That’s because the Canucks come back as one of the teams that could part with a first-round pick about five-plus weeks after the 2024 trade deadline.
Vancouver’s 2024 No. 1 pick is newly listed at No. 11 on TSN’s latest trade bait board. That’s six spots higher than Edmonton’s fellow newcomer, No. 17 in the first round.
These are the only two teams that currently have that asset listed.
This year, a few valuable players on the trade market are expected to receive a first-round pick in return.
Most likely Calgary Center Elias Lindholm, trade bait committee number one, Calgary right defenseman Chris Tanev (No. 2), Montreal Center Sean Monahan (No. 3) and Pittsburgh’s left winger Jake Guentzel (No. 15), if he hits the open market.
Monaghan would likely need the added incentive of salary retention from Montreal in order to acquire a first-round pick.
The Canucks and Oilers are both looking to acquire a top-six forward.
Winnipeg, Colorado, Boston and the Rangers are among the teams looking for a center.
Toronto is at the top of the list of teams seeking a top-four defenseman (Tanev), but the Leafs are thought to be reluctant to part with a first-rounder.
Ottawa is also keen on impending UFA Tanev. However, he may make sense as a summer signing for the player himself, as the Senators are out of playoff contention.
First-round companies aren’t the only assets in Vancouver and Edmonton on TSN’s tradebait board. The other is Vancouver’s left winger. Andrei Kuzmenko (No. 12), Edmonton left defenseman Filip Broberg (number 18) and left winger Warren Vogel (21st place).
Vancouver enters the All-Star break first in the entire NHL standings. They are tied with Boston (71) in points, but lead based on more wins (33-31).
Meanwhile, Edmonton is one win away from tying an NHL record with 17 consecutive wins and two wins away from setting a new record.
But wins in Las Vegas on Feb. 6 and Anaheim on Feb. 9 aren’t what the Oilers want to define their season.
Edmonton is seeking to become the first Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup since Montreal in 1993.
Same with Vancouver, Winnipeg and Toronto.
Winnipeg ranks third overall in scoring percentage (.691) behind Vancouver and Boston (.724). Toronto won back-to-back games against Winnipeg before the All-Star break and moved up to 11th overall (.617).
