Imagine spending months recording lines to lead a new Bethesda mainline game, and perhaps one of the most important Xbox exclusives of a generation. Then they say, “It turns out that I’m actually playing the role of a silent protagonist.”
That was the situation confronting Elias Toufexis and Cissy Jones were originally selected by Bethesda as the male and female voices for Starfield’s player-created explorers. But somewhere along the way, Bethesda didn’t want to repeat Fallout 4 and instead decided to silence the protagonist.
Tufexis is best known for voicing Adam Jensen in Deus Ex, among countless other roles, and is also a prolific voice for Sissy Jones, appearing in Baldur’s Gate 3, Remnant 2, and Red Fall this year alone. ”, “Jedi Survivor”, and “Destiny 2”. The end result for both of them.
Rather than simply scrapping the production and saying goodbye, Bethesda turned both actors into two of the game’s core companion NPCs, Sam Kor and Andreja. I think there’s no doubt about these two. the best Friends, and characters who obviously still have thousands of lines in the game. Frankly, maybe it’s more than Reed originally had.
This was revealed by Toufexis on Twitter last week, something no one knew before, and he said Bethesda is taking care of both parties and making sure they have important roles in the game even after their original roles are gone. I brought this up as a way to praise him for his work. Cuts that inspire loyalty to future projects:
I don’t think Toufexis and Jones had the same voice for Sam and Andreja in their leads. I mean, I’m sure we weren’t supposed to be cowboys, and uh…I don’t know what Andreja’s accent is. But we’re not just dumping our longtime companions, given that the upcoming Shattered Space expansion will add even more story content to Starfield, so we’re hoping their efforts continue there as well. I hope that it will be done.
It’s a neat little story, and ultimately yes, I think for a Bethesda game, avoiding player character voices was probably the right decision in the end. Generally I’m not a fan of that, but when I compare the way things go in Fallout 4 as opposed to other Fallout or Elder Scrolls games without voiced heroes, this is a game of this type. I think it’s the right decision for Starfield, and probably the right move for Starfield. Although obviously Mass Effect, they needed to give Commander Shepard an actual voice.
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next in Starfield, even if it’s a little buried among the six GOTY candidates here lately.
