The federal government has chosen Kananaskis, Alberta, to host next year’s G7 summit.
This will be the first time Canada has hosted the summit since 2018. Kananaskis, just west of Calgary, was the site of the 2002 summit.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau traveled to Italy’s Puglia region this week for this year’s summit, where the two leaders agreed to a new deal to use frozen Russian assets to help defend Ukraine following Russia’s victories on the battlefield. Canada has agreed to contribute $5 billion as part of the plan.
The last two G7 summits hosted by Canada have been marked by controversy.
Then-US President Donald Trump left a 2018 conference in Charlevoix, Quebec, early to attend a summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Trump also tweeted to government officials: Withdrew support immediately after the summit statement was released.
