A 15-year-old Ottawa boy charged with planning a terrorist attack against Jews appeared in court Wednesday for a bail hearing scheduled for January.
He will be remanded in custody until his next appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa on January 15th.
The boy appeared in court by video from a youth detention center early Wednesday afternoon wearing a brown crewneck sweatshirt.
He gave his name and date of birth and agreed to a bail hearing in nearly a month.
Due to the protection of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, he cannot be identified.
The boy was arrested in Ottawa on Dec. 15 by an RCMP-led team of federal, provincial and local police forces and other partners who respond to threats to national security.
Some charges date back to earlier this fall
In late October, the boy allegedly instructed someone to carry out terrorist activities against Jews, and around the same time gave instructions regarding explosives.
The complaint does not specify specific targets or when or where the terrorist activity took place.
The other three charges are related to explosives allegedly found in the boy’s home when a search warrant was executed the night he was arrested.
These substances include acetone (a highly flammable and volatile liquid with a strong odor, often found in nail polish remover) and unspecified oxidizing agents (substances used to promote combustion). It was included.
The five charges against the boy are as follows:
- In late October, he facilitated terrorist activities by transmitting instructions regarding explosives.
- In late October, individuals were instructed to carry out terrorist acts against Jews.
- Promoting terrorist activities by possessing explosive substances (acetone, oxidizers, metal ball bearings).
- Possession of an explosive substance (acetone or oxidizing agent) with intent to endanger life.
- Illegal possession of explosive substances (acetone and oxidizing agents).
The charges against him have not been proven in court.
The boy is being represented by defense attorney John Doody of the Ottawa law firm Bain Seller Ertel McRae.
