Quebec MPs are increasing pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as party leader.
Sources who spoke to CBC News said Quebec caucus chair Stéphane Lauzon consulted with members individually during his vacation and informed national caucus leadership of the caucus’ position.
A Quebec Liberal MP told CBC News that the consensus within the party is that Trudeau should resign.
The lawmaker spoke to CBC News on condition that his name not be used to protect the confidentiality of the caucus.
Another MP, Alexandra Mendes, told CBC News that she understands the consensus of her caucus is that “the prime minister should step down.”
“That was the consensus that was communicated to the caucus chair and that was what he intended to communicate to the caucus.”
Ms. Mendez maintains that she was not one of the members of Congress whom Ms. Lauzon consulted. She says this is probably because she had already publicly called for the prime minister’s resignation several weeks ago.

CBC News has reached out to Lauzon, who is currently on vacation, for comment.

The prime minister is vacationing in British Columbia with his family and is believed to be taking time to reflect on his future.
The Atlantic Coast and Ontario Liberal caucuses have already signaled a consensus among their respective members that Trudeau should resign, calling on him to resign as party leader last week.
