Members of the federal Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security are calling for an emergency meeting to discuss “steps the government can take to protect Canadians and our country.”
Committee says the revelations are ‘very worrying’
The federal Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security has unanimously called for an emergency meeting to investigate allegations of Indian government covert operations in Canada, MP Alistair McGregor said.
Members of the standing committee wrote in a letter dated Tuesday that the RCMP’s revelations were “deeply disturbing.” They are calling for a discussion on “steps the government can take to protect Canadians and our country.”
On Monday, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duhame accused Indian government agents of “widespread violence” in Canada, including murder and “well over a dozen” imminent threats against members of the Indo-Canadian community, particularly Sikhs. He claimed that there was a connection with “violence.”
The commission’s request comes after NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh told reporters on Tuesday that he wants a parliamentary committee to look into how to protect Canadians from Indian threats.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that his government had expelled six Indian diplomats after New Delhi refused to cooperate with a criminal investigation.
