Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned Iran’s missile attack on Israel, but says the international community must do everything it can to avoid a larger regional war.
Gunfights between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon over the past year escalated into broader violence last week, as Israel stepped up air attacks on Hezbollah and began sending in ground troops on Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, Iran fired about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel and warned of “severe” attacks if Israel responded in kind.
Prime Minister Trudeau said the Iranian attack was yet another destabilizing move by a “regime of terror” that endangered civilians and risked sparking a broader war.
Speaking with other G7 leaders in an early morning telephone conversation, he said they all agreed that the international community must do everything in its power to achieve peace and stability in the region.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council that in just one week, the alarming situation in Lebanon had gone from worst to “much worse”. He called for an end to hostilities.
