Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will include eight Liberal MPs as front-runners and reappoint four incumbent ministers in a cabinet reshuffle on Friday morning, CTV News reported.
After a tumultuous week for the federal Liberal Party, several changes to the cabinet list are seen as an attempt to bring some stability to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration just a month before he takes office.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET in the Rideau Hall ballroom with Governor Mary Simon presiding and Prime Minister Trudeau will also attend, marking his first public appearance since facing new calls for his resignation. It will be.
Here’s who will be moving, according to a list of changes leaked to CTV News ahead of the ceremony and confirmed by a second source.
According to the memo, and as officials confirmed yesterday, Ontario MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith will be Canada’s next Housing and Infrastructure Community Leader, replacing Sean Fraser, who announced on Monday that he would not run again. He plans to become a minister.
And he will take over the public safety portfolio from Dominique LeBlanc, Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs, who took over the top economic post on Monday following the surprise resignation of Chrystia Freeland. Becomes Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Intelligence (NSICOP). ) David McGuinty.
The other Liberal Party members who will join the cabinet are:
- Quebec Member of Parliament Rachel Bendayan will serve as Canada’s Minister of Official Languages and Deputy Minister of Public Safety.
- Quebec MP Elisabeth Brière will become Minister of National Taxes, replacing Marie-Claude Bibeau, who is not running again.
- Terry Duguid, a member of the Manitoba Parliament, will be appointed Minister of Economic Development for the Canadian Prairies.
- Nova Scotia MP Darren Fisher is Canada’s new Minister of Veterans Affairs and Deputy Minister of Defence.
- Newfoundland and Labrador MP Joanne Thompson will assume the role of senior minister, a role she inherited after Seamus O’Regan resigned from the cabinet.
- Outgoing Ontario MP Ruby Sahota will become Minister of Economic Development for Southern Ontario, a position held by outgoing Minister Philomena Tassi.
Mr Duguid and Mr Sahota are expected to receive additional ministerial positions as well as the sports and democracy portfolios, but the people could not confirm which positions they would hold.
The following ministers are currently serving in new or modified positions:
- Anita Anand, who was also the Finance Commission President and Transport Minister, will be appointed as Transport and Internal Trade Minister.
- Gary Anandasangaree is retaining his role as Minister of Crown and Indigenous Relations, taking over the Northern Affairs and Northern Economic Development Canada posts from Dan Vandal, who is not running again.
- Stephen McKinnon remains Labor minister, taking over the jobs, workforce development and official languages role from Randy Boissonneau, who resigned last month to focus on resolving allegations against him.
- And Ginette Petitpas Taylor will become Canada’s next chair of the Treasury Board.
As expected, based on LeBlanc’s comments yesterday, Mark Carney will not be appointed to a cabinet position in this reshuffle, as Prime Minister Trudeau assured LeBlanc that he will remain in his current position until the next election.
Sources say Prime Minister Trudeau is prepared to change his entourage, but this should not be interpreted as the prime minister ready to declare next steps, and whether Trudeau will take questions after the shuffle remains to be seen. I don’t know yet.
Prime Minister Trudeau also convened a cabinet meeting at 3:00 p.m. ET.
Asked Thursday if Trudeau had the full support of his cabinet to remain prime minister, LeBlanc said “yes.”
