Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce two months of GST relief on some items for the holiday season to address affordability issues, sources confirm to CTV News.
Prime Minister Trudeau is expected to announce the tax cuts on Thursday, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. policy The announcement was first reported by the Globe and Mail.
The temporary GST relief will also apply to children’s items such as clothing and diapers, as well as cooked hot meals. Does not apply to monthly charges.
Last week, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh promised to eliminate GST on household items and monthly bills if elected.
Late Wednesday, after being briefed on the upcoming announcement, the NDP released a statement taking credit for the policy.
“The NDP is offering Canadians a winter tax holiday, and the Prime Minister’s Office has just informed us that the Prime Minister is partially supportive of our essential goods tax holiday campaign,” Singh said. .
The statement also suggested that the NDP “will vote yes on this bill because workers desperately need relief, and we are proud to once again serve them.”
The Liberals’ proposed GST cuts would require legislation and would need support from other parties to break the current two-month logjam in the House of Commons. The impasse is over the government’s refusal to hand over documents related to the now-defunct Green Tech Fund. No bill can be passed until the issue has been debated.
NDP officials told CTV News the party is still weighing its options on whether to support the Liberals to break the deadlock in the House of Commons.
This is a developing story. Details will be announced later.
