Republican nominee Donald Trump said Tuesday he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week.
In his first public appearance since Sunday’s assassination attempt, Trump said Modi was “fantastic” but called India a “very big abuser” and criticized several countries over their trade policies with the United States.
“India is a big abuser. I’m meeting with Prime Minister Modi next week, and he’s fantastic. Really fantastic,” Trump said at a town hall in Flint, Michigan. “A lot of leaders are great. They’re on top of their game and they use it against us. But India is very, very tough.”
Trump did not provide further details about the meeting. The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
As president, Trump visited India in 2020 and vowed to strengthen trade ties between the two countries. The United States is currently India’s second-largest trading partner after China.
PM Modi will visit the US from September 21-23 and will participate in the fourth Quad summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by US President Joe Biden. The Indian PM also Plan to attend and give a talk In front of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
This will be Modi’s first visit to the United States since winning a historic third term in power in June.
