Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says politicians have no say in police operational decisions, which is why she has nothing more to say about the Rebel News personality’s arrest. He said that there is.
David Menzies, a commentator on the online site, was arrested Monday by RCMP officers guarding Freeland as he tried to question the minister outside an event in Richmond Hill, Ont.
Rebel News video shows Menzies confronting a police officer and being told he was being arrested on suspicion of assault. Menzies responded that the officer had hit him.
Mr Menzies, who has previously been arrested at political events featuring Conservative politicians, said in an interview that he believed he was arrested because the Liberals did not like his expressions or questions.
Freeland, who is also deputy prime minister, said Canada is a democracy and police make operational decisions within their jurisdictions.
York Regional Police said Menzies was released unconditionally after it was determined there was no credible security threat. RCMP say they are “investigating the incident and the actions of all involved.”
