The new federal land available for housing in Ottawa was announced a day after the Ottawa Real Estate Board said Ottawa has a “chronic supply problem” with housing.
“We are not building enough housing in the city, and we are not building enough decent housing to address the ‘lost middle class,'” OREB Chairman Curtis Fillier said in a statement. .
Fillier told CTV News Ottawa that the federal government’s announcement about the new land is “a positive step in the right direction.”
“The biggest problem right now with housing is supply. The demand is there and the demand is increasing,” Fillier said, adding that federal land will be leased rather than sold, which will affect the type of development. He pointed out that there is a possibility.
“Developers obviously want to maximize profitability, so the likely use would be to build high-rise type units, perhaps one or two bedrooms. “That’s not really the kind of housing we’re designing.” You need it now or you need to rent it, but you know, there’s a lot of towers going up around Ottawa right now. ”
John DeVries of the Ottawa Construction Association says the future is “rosy” for the city’s construction industry.
“Any announcement by the federal government to provide more land to the city is good news for the construction industry as a whole, because we need housing. “We need to maintain activity, employment and overall industry profitability,” he said in an interview.
