(Read here for the scoop on that conversation.)
“We’ve been thinking about exploring this for a while and felt like this year was the perfect time to do it,” showrunner Tim Minear told TV Insider, adding that he’s been thinking about “buying back” for a while now. He talked about what he calls “Ark.” “I often let the story tell me a little bit about what I wanted it to be. It just felt like an opportunity for me.” Originally, he planned to bring back Arielle Kebbell as Lucy for the pilot for Episode 3. However, she made a reservation. Rescue: HI Surf.
“The next logical step was to go with a character named Tommy who hasn’t been on the show much, but he was in a flashback episode and left on good terms. He started out as a morally compromised character who was at the mercy of Gerrard. [Brian Thompson] But by the time he left with “Bobby Begins Again,” they had made him a cake. He was starting to become part of the gang in a way,” Minia explains. “And I also felt like Lou had a lot of charisma in scenes where he wasn’t supposed to be an asshole. There’s a scene where everyone is comparing their scars. And then Bobby shows up and we see that Tommy already has some kind of bond with two people that we actually love, and I think he has a lot of charisma in that scene. I felt like I was there.”
The showrunners had already planned this arc for Buck when they realized they were bringing Tommy back. “I really liked the idea of playing this with a character who wasn’t invented for this arc and who has at least a little presence in this universe,” he says, noting: . There’s a lot going on with Tommy, so I was like, well, let’s roll the dice on this one. And I think it’s working.”
Before the season started, Stark said Buck was open to anything that would make him happy. The star admitted that Tommy was “definitely going to be a part of what makes him happy,” but previously said that “there’s no way he knew anything about what specifically would make him feel good.” but just whatever the feeling is, whatever it is.” Those came from sticking with it and following that feeling. Still, he says, “I think there’s some hope” for this arc.
This is one that looks like it will be useful for a while. “This is going to be a process of thinking about how to move forward and what this means for him, and it might turn out that it actually doesn’t mean that much to him, it’s not a big change, it’s not. It doesn’t have to be a big life switch for him,” Stark continued. “And I think there’s actually something more loving and accepting about that. He’s still Buck and he’s okay with this and he’s just found something that makes him feel good.” ,It is okay.”
meanwhile 9-1-1 Buck has only been shown with women, which doesn’t necessarily mean he hasn’t had relationships with men, but according to Stark, “I think this is the first time for Buck. It’s probably been a long time. I think it’s been happening for a while, but I’ve never been consciously aware of it. It’s completely new to Buck, so I’m really excited about this.”
From now on, Buck will “rely on his family” [including Maddie] Then I found my family and looked for support. Because there will surely be moments when he wonders who he is and what this means for him. That’s a big change,” Stark says. “He absolutely has to rely on his loved ones and hopefully be supported by them.”
As we’ve seen, and as featured in this episode, Buck hasn’t had the best luck with relationships (although he’s already decided not to date anyone he meets over the phone). ). His future steps may change that. why? “He says it a few times in the episode, and it’s almost a childish way of saying it, but he thinks Tommy is really cool. And as we’re about to see. , he’s really okay with himself and really proud of who he is,” shares Stark. “Buck has had many different identities and been searching for something over the years. And even though he thinks he’s so okay with himself and accepts himself for who he is, he actually isn’t, right? Because , because we’ve seen him get back to it and try something new. So I think there’s something about Tommy’s confidence that’s very appealing to Buck.”
But he understands why Buck is stuck in that cycle. “We all often find ourselves looking for something, wondering what is missing in our lives. And I think this was part of it, at least for Buck. .”
In general, Stark enjoys “discovering new things.” [the arc continues], even when you play these scenes, you don’t necessarily know in advance how they’re going to feel in that moment. So, as an actor, it’s quite an exploration to discover these scenes and perform them with emotion. It’s a really exciting time and I feel like the writers are excited to tell this story as well. That always feels good to me. I know Tim really loved writing this story for Buck, and you feel it when he steps on set. ”
