New frontier in fraudulent hotel rates: Fairmont Whistler charges extra fees to pay for other extras
Guests staying at the Fairmont Whistler in Canada are required to pay a fee in addition to their room rate to cover housekeeping wages. The hotel then charges guests an additional fee to manage this fee.

Housekeeping surcharge:
Housekeeping services are subject to an additional housekeeping surcharge of CAD 5.00 per day and applicable taxes. Of this amount, CAD 4.50 is distributed to the housekeeping team in tips, and the remaining CAD 0.50 is entirely retained by the hotel (and is not distributed as wages, tips, or tips to hotel employees). We will post mandatory daily surcharges and applicable taxes using the same billing arrangement method requested for applicable room rates and taxes. This additional charge is subject to change at any time without notice.
Let’s live and flyThe charges were first reported by To tell “Isn’t housekeeping included in your room anymore?”
That’s one idea, but it’s actually included in the room as it’s not an optional fee. It’s just:
- How to hide the real price of a hotel. If you compare Fee, especially comparison sites like Expedia, hide the true (full) cost of a room. Therefore, the hotel looks cheaper than its competitors.
- A way to charge a higher price than the one offered to the guest. Guests have to pay for their stay, but it’s a few dollars more each night.
- It is a way of passing on hotel costs to guests, which of course is usually considered to be the room rate.
In other words, it’s a scam. To add insult to injury, the hotel charges CAD$4.50 per night “given to the housekeeper” to supplement her salary, plus an administrative fee paid to the hotel to manage the fraud. They charge an additional 50 Canadian cents.
Fairmont Whistler isn’t the only hotel to add mandatory fraudulent charges, such as extra charges for the use of lamps in guest rooms. The innovation here for me is to charge a fraudulent fee for a service that charges a fraudulent fee.
