Twenty-five years later, actor Ewan McGregor’s memories of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and more specifically the movie’s theatrical release, are not so fond.
The veteran actor attended the Gothenburg Film Festival, the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award, this week to talk about the role of his career. That included the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, and he said he remembers how people threw the movies in the trash.
“I’m happy that I’m this character to a lot of people, but when these movies came out, they were so hated. It was tough. Even though the first one was panned, , we had to make two more. It was weird to be in a movie that got slammed.”
At the time of its release, Star Wars was virtually untouchable as a franchise, and the publicity for the film was extremely effective. The delivered production brought mixed reviews, even though it did very well at the box office.
But for fans, it was seen as a betrayal, giving rise to a more toxic side, which unfortunately still exists today. Over time, feelings have changed somewhat. Time has been kind to the prequels, especially since the post-Lucas era of Star Wars was so complicated.
McGregor has said he would be happy to return to reprise his role in the Disney+ event series Obi-Wan Kenobi, but no one has contacted him. She said, “I’d love to do a season two, but there’s no talk” yet. There’s a lot going on at Disney. ”
McGregor will team up with his daughter Clara to appear in his latest film, Bleeding Love, which will be released on February 16th.
