EDMONTON — Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets and is expected to be out for one to two weeks.
McDavid did not play for the final 4:20 of the third period and remained on the bench during overtime at Rogers Place. The forward appeared to reach for his left side while rushing up the ice and slid toward the bench on his final shift.
McDavid had two assists in the loss. He has eight points (two goals, six assists) in five games with Edmonton (1-3-1).
“We’re not back there (in the locker room) yet, but I’m sure there will be something tomorrow,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. “When I watched the play, it seemed like nothing, and more than anything, it looked muscular. Let’s take a look. There’s more information. [Sunday]”
Before the 3-on-3 overtime period, McDavid stepped onto the ice and took a light skate. However, he remained on the bench throughout the overtime period.
Winnipeg forward Mark Scheifele won in 3 minutes, 53 seconds.
“I think we were aware, but that’s probably the biggest understatement of the century,” Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey said when asked about McDavid’s absence in overtime. “I don’t know what’s going on there, but you’re looking for him in 3-on-3 overtime, so we realized, yeah.”
McDavid played 20 minutes, 48 seconds and had one shot on goal before going to the bench. He was taken down by Morrissey at 12:33 of the first period while running up the ice toward the Winnipeg net. Morrissey received a two-minute minor suspension for continuing to play.
“No, I was more expecting him to come on the ice.” [in third period] And he felt something wasn’t right,” Woodcroft said. “That’s what it looked like from the bench. But I haven’t looked at it even once.”
