Helldivers 2 is the latest release surprise hit It’s the first in the gaming world since Palworld a few weeks ago, but it’s still very impressive. The co-op shooter, which was published on PlayStation, did very well on Steam and was released at the same time as the PS5 version, something Sony has rarely done before.
In fact, Sony has ventured further into PC over time, bringing blockbuster games to the platform long after launch. But even for a “minor” franchise like Helldivers, the date-and-date launch saw its concurrent peak of 155,000 more than double God of War’s peak of 73,000. And I think it would probably be even higher today if it wasn’t Super Bowl Sunday. I mean, it could still happen.
This was clearly an experiment. Sony has been experimenting with more closely related PC releases for a long time, but this was a game they thought they could totally pull the trigger on. And guess what? done. And now I think this is going to change the way Sony releases games going forward. There should be a branch from here.
Large single-player games, traditionally exclusive to PlayStation, will continue to be released only at PS5 launch. Then, some time later, those games are released on PC. The difference will narrow. God of War had a gap of about three and a half years, and I’d be surprised if it didn’t shrink to less than two years.
But given what we’re seeing here with Helldiver, I doubt Sony will release the planned live service game exclusively on PlayStation. We already know this isn’t the case with games like Bungie’s Marathon. Despite Sony ownership, all his Bungie games are promised to remain multiplatform.
But I also believe that this ultimately applies to anything It is now a live service multiplayer title. I would argue that in order to reach the critical mass for the level of sustainability we hope for in these games, we first need player numbers. Live services also allow players to be drawn into the “ecosystem” through the purchase of battle passes and cosmetics, so there is less worry about selling copies of the box. This is a fishing game that you can play for a long time.
I think this will also happen with IPs that are more closely tied to PlayStation, like the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn live multiplayer game. And if The Last of Us Factions hadn’t been canceled, it would have been wise to release it on the same day on Steam as well.
It’s unlikely that Sony will fully pull the trigger on Microsoft-style date and time on PC or throw everything into PS Plus from day one in order to live up to its all-exclusivity philosophy. They say they won’t, but the budgets for these games probably won’t support it.But Sony have I was worried about my reach being limited by the PlayStation box, but I think we’ll start to rely more heavily on the PC, as we see here with Helldivers 2. I also think there will be a little more flexibility with traditional games. good.
