In honor of Nutrition Month, Haliburton, Kawartha and Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPRDHU) is encouraging people to participate in Nutrition Month by being mindful of what they put on their plates and practicing other good habits at mealtimes. We encourage residents to:
March is Nutrition Month, and March 20th is Nutritionist Day. HKPRDHU emphasizes the role of registered dietitians as trusted sources of nutritional information and healthy eating guidance.
“Healthy eating is about more than just making good food choices. It means taking time to eat, listening to your hunger cues, cooking more often and eating with others.” “It’s about embracing mindful practices like enjoying food, celebrating culture and food traditions,” dietitian Elsie Azevedo Perry said in a media release.

Dietitians point to Canada’s Food Guide as a resource to help residents choose healthy food combinations every day, making it easier to eat well and stay healthy. Canada’s Food Guide encourages the following habits:
- Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein foods every day
- Drink more water and avoid sugary drinks
- Be aware of when you are hungry and when you are full
- Take your time when eating.Please enjoy your meal
- Try cooking more meals at home and involving others.
- Choose healthy fats (such as nuts, seeds, avocados, and fatty fish) and reduce saturated fats (such as highly processed foods and some tropical oils).
- Limit highly processed foods (sugar drinks, candy, potato chips, fast food, etc.)

HKPRDHU works with local partners to create healthy eating environments in local communities, schools, and daycare centers.

Healthy Family Meals and Nutrition Clinic
HKPRDHU assists and guides parents/guardians seeking nutritional support regarding infant and child feeding, including breastfeeding, introduction of solid foods, and preconception and prenatal nutrition-related concerns.
