We’re about to witness one of the biggest events of the year in video games, and it’ll likely be a two-minute trailer for a game that won’t be released for 6-18 months. It’s Grand Theft Auto 6, of course, and the trailer is scheduled to be released tomorrow morning.
Rockstar is now officially “Waiting pageFor “GTA 6 Trailer” it is labeled “Trailer 1” and has no other titles. The trailer is scheduled to be released on YouTube tomorrow, December 5th at 9am ET, so you can sit there for 24 hours if you want.
In the three minutes since I opened my email to see the trailer waiting room news, the video has already received 58,000 likes. Sorry, it’s 61,000. Sorry, it’s 65,000. The live viewership counter appears to be stuck at 27,000, but we know it’s trending much higher than that. The trailer announcement on Twitter became the most-liked video game-related tweet in history. I believe the trailer itself could set an all-time record.
The chat is only active in the form of people sending out smiley faces and heart emojis, likely because Rockstar is trying to avoid spoilers leaking over a period of 24 hours or years.
There’s no music to wait for, and no new images beyond what we saw in last week’s announcement teaser. As we mentioned earlier, going back to the first GTA 5 trailer might give you an idea of what we’re seeing here. That’s because the narration (by Michael) outlined the plot as loosely as possible, and that was the main focus. As for San Andreas itself, it contrasts its opulence with its crime. So this could be more of an overview of the new Vice City than a deep dive into its leads and storylines. After all, this is trailer one, with more to come.
The idea remains that GTA 6 will be released within Take Two’s next year, and they have strongly hinted at it to investors. It could be a holiday 2024 release, or a spring 2025 release. Given this scale, I always expect it to be later than sooner, and delays are never out of the question. However, this has been over 10 years in the making, and we would like to avoid this if possible.
Tomorrow will be a fascinating day. I’m looking forward to the trailer itself, but even the minimal preview is attracting attention, so I’m interested to see what kind of viewing record it will set in the end. My guess is that with GTA 5 sales reaching his 190 million mark, it’s a completely different era for this series now.
