Newfoundland Growlers owners say they are working toward a “positive resolution” to the current uncertainty surrounding the team.
In a statement released today, Deacon Sports and Entertainment said it is working with the ECHL in discussions ahead of next Tuesday’s board meeting.
This is the league-imposed deadline for Deacon Sports to complete the sale of its other team, the Trois-Rivières Lions.
The sale, which is believed to include the Growlers, has reportedly stalled, and the league has set a deadline of April 2nd. The board will assess the situation and decide how to proceed, which could include taking control of both teams.
The Deacons reportedly owe the city of Trois-Rivières more than $1 million for the use of the arena. The city adopted a motion this week involving banks to guarantee repayment of the money owed.
But what that means for the Growlers, who host the Lions next weekend at Mary Brown’s Center from April 5-7, remains unclear.
“These games are critical to our playoff aspirations and we encourage fans to secure their tickets,” Deacon Sports said in a statement.
They added that they are aware of the community’s concerns about the team’s future.
“We are diligently pursuing a solution and will issue an update as soon as a solution is available.”
