Google could shake things up with the launch of the Pixel 9 series later this year. That’s because four separate models can be seen, including the renamed Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This nugget of information comes from a “Google insider” who said: Android permissions. According to sources, this quartet consists of the base His Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, the new His Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the aforementioned foldable model. Not much is known about the individual devices. Neither specs nor features were mentioned in the leak. However, having all four in the same lineup suggests they will offer similar performance, which will be a big deal, especially for his Pixel Fold fans.
As we all know, the original Pixel Fold was a bit of a disappointment. While this is still a solid smartphone, the Tensor G2 chipset in the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7 series proved to be a failure. Performance is decent but not amazing, and phones with Tensor G2 tend to have poor battery life. Additionally, in our experience, these devices can get extremely hot. Remember, when the Fold launched, it cost $1,800 in the US. You can’t blame people for wanting more.
Until recently, it was thought that the Pixel Fold 2 would feature a Tensor G3 chipset and solve all the problems of the previous model. However, we are still waiting for the next foldable product to be announced.
possible hardware
It’s hard to say exactly what hardware is inside. Again, device specifications were not included in the report. Previous leaks suggest that the upcoming phone will use the expected Tensor G4 chipset. That system-on-chip (SoC) will be included in the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro. Logically, it would be the same hardware as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Design-wise, Android Authority claims the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is similar to the other three models. The site said it has seen renderings of the smartphone but has not shared any of them. They instead posted an image of what was then known as the Pixel Fold 2 from a further leak in late February.
What’s your name?
On the topic of names, “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” may not be the official name at the time of release. According to Android Authority, the name change from “Fold 2” to its current name is a recent event. The current brand may just be a placeholder until a suitable title is determined.
As always, take this leak with a grain of salt. Circumstances can change at any time. Google I/O 2024 starts in about a month, so you won’t have to wait long to learn more. At the event, a teaser for the Pixel 8a and the new series will be released.
