Seth Jones skated to the goal line and passed the puck in front of the net, where Kurashev tapped it in to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 6:49 of the second period.
Mantha received a pass from Connor McMichael at the blue line at 8:11, slipped through the slot and scored on a backhander to tie the score at 1-1.
Strome gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 13:50. When TJ Oshie hit Chicago defenseman Alex Vlasic into the back of the net and freed the puck for Alex Ovechkin, he scored head-on and passed to Joel Edmundson before Strom tapped in.
“That’s what ‘Osh’ brings,” Strom said. “He can do so many different things every night. He’s unbelievable, an unreal team guy, good on the power play, everywhere he needs to be, really Chip in whatever you want. He’s scoring goals, setting up plays, obviously making big hits.”
Capitals manager Spencer Carberry said Oshie’s hit was a big boost for the team.
“100 percent,” he said. “A lot of energy flowed into our bench on a play like that. It creates goals, but that’s just the physical part of it. On top of that, we have a skilled player who can score goals. You can do something like that and complete a check that gets everyone excited. On back-to-back Sundays when you’re looking for inspiration, it’s right there.”
Dowd extended the lead to 3-1 at 15:23, sweeping the rebound while lying on the ice after a collision.
“Honestly, it’s very difficult to score from a tight spot like that,” Dowd said. “The team plays really good defense. It’s hard to take shots in today’s game. A lot of goals are scored there. I think you saw that tonight.”
