Users on various social media platforms noticed excessive crowding at Union Station last night, with hundreds of people stranded trying to get home.
Reddit user skipper_8 posted a photo of people crammed into various parts of the station with little room to move.
City News contacted Metrolinx to ask about potential maintenance issues, but the transit agency said the main reason for the congestion is the amount of people.
Metrolinx Media Relations said in a statement: “The video in question appears to have been shot during busy hours when bars were closed and people waiting for trains, buses and subways.”
“Major events like New Year’s Eve involve extensive planning and preparation to accommodate the expected increase in customer numbers at this time of year. Concourse congestion will also be directly affected by TTC service changes, as increased congestion will result.”
TikTok user bypacho1 I posted a video Hundreds of people were at Union Station at 1:40 a.m. waiting to board some form of transportation home.
Because the free services were in place all night, with many starting at 7 p.m., more people than usual took transit to get where they needed to go, Metrolinx said.
“Train and bus traffic was higher than normal as free GO Transit service was in operation throughout the night, but we were able to get everyone home safely,” Metrolinx Media Relations continued in a statement. Ta.
