Foreign Minister announces new sanctions against 10 people and six entities
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said Canada imposed sanctions on 10 people and six entities on the anniversary of Belarus’ fraudulent 2020 presidential election.
The sanctions are in response to what Jolie describes as ongoing and systematic human rights violations in Belarus and support for Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.
The sanctions list also includes judges who Canada alleges arbitrarily condemned citizens who voiced opposition to the 2020 elections.
This includes those coordinating military production in Belarus in cooperation with Russia.
Canada also imposed sanctions on entities involved in manufacturing and repairing military equipment used in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as state-owned companies that intimidated and fired employees who took part in peaceful protests and strikes after the 2020 election.
The measure was implemented in coordination with the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.
