The Canadian government has designated the Yemeni militant group Ansarullah, commonly known as the Houthis, as a terrorist organization in an effort to “fight terrorism globally.”
Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada said in a statement Monday that the Yemeni militant group Ansarullah falls within the definition of a “terrorist group” under the Canadian Criminal Code.
Ansarullah has ties to two other organizations listed as terrorist organizations in Canada: the Iran-based Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force (IRGC) and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The extremist group has targeted numerous ships transiting the Red Sea since November 2023.
Canada provided support to the United States and Britain during a series of attacks against Houthi targets in Yemen in February, but no Canadian military weapons were used in the attacks, a Pentagon spokesperson said Sunday.
“Today’s addition of Ansarala as a terrorist organization contributes to our efforts in the fight against terrorism,” LeBlanc said.
“Violent extremism and terrorism have no place in the world, and we are committed to taking action to curb the international spread of these activities and counter threats to Canada, Canadians, and interests around the world. We will continue.”
Canada’s criminal law imposes penalties on individuals or groups who knowingly transact business with publicly traded companies. According to the statement, federal law prohibits certain activities associated with terrorist groups, including terrorist financing, travel, and recruitment.
