Delhi Chief Minister and AAP president Arvind Kejriwal called the arrests “illegal” and said the BJP would arrest more opposition leaders.
“Sanjay Singh’s arrest is completely illegal.
This shows Modiji’s desperation. They will arrest more opposition leaders in the run up to the elections,” Kejriwal told X.
Singh’s staff and people associated with him had earlier been questioned by the ED in this case.
The arrest of the AAP cadre sparked anger within the party, with angry workers gathering outside the Congress leader’s residence in the national capital and raising slogans against the Centre.
After the arrest, AAP ministers Artish and Saurabh Bhardwaj slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party and said the ED’s move “shows the Bharatiya Janata Party’s discontent.”
AAP leader Artish claimed that Singh’s arrest without any evidence was all part of the BJP’s “pre-planned script”.
“this [Singh’s arrest] It shows the desperation of the BJP. We know that the people of India are determined to overthrow the Bharatiya Janata Party government. And every time a dictatorship fears its removal, it begins to imprison those who speak out against it. This is happening in India now,” Artishi said at a press conference.
She added that Singh’s arrest was “the beginning of the end for the Bharatiya Janata Party”.
Later, reacting to the development, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar said Singh’s arrest would further strengthen the opposition’s Indian alliance.
“Play the victim card”
Following the arrest, the BJP harshly criticized AAP and said that despite having ‘aam aadmi’ in its name, the party works for ‘khaas aadmi’.
“The BJP has clearly stated zero tolerance towards corruption in its manifesto…Your name is ‘Aam Aadmi’ but you are working for ‘Khas Aadmi’. There should be an investigation into this. , an agency like ED will conduct an investigation,” said Bharatiya Janata Party MP Rajyavardhan Rathore.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accused AAP of playing the “victim card” over Singh’s arrest, just as it had done during Sisodia’s arrest.
“If we are being honest, why was the FIR filed in August 2022 not quashed…if there was no fraud, why did we go back to the old policy?” Poonawalla asked.
Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP said the heat of the probe will be on its leader Arvind Kejriwal.
“The curse of women who opened liquor shops in front of their homes and made their children addicted to alcohol has worked. Sanjay Singh has also been arrested. The investigation will soon reach Kejriwal,” Delhi India People’s Party MP Manoj Tiwari said. He said.
Earlier today, a war of words broke out between AAP and the BJP in the wake of an attack on a Rajya Sabha member.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal led the AAP attack, saying the Bharatiya Janata Party was resorting to desperate measures in anticipation of defeat in the 2024 Indian Assembly polls. The BJP reacted strongly, calling Mr Kejriwal the “key man” in the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam.
The Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to license liquor traders is said to have allowed cartelization and gave preferential treatment to certain traders who allegedly paid bribes for the purpose. I strongly objected.
The policy was subsequently scrapped and the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi recommended a CBI probe, after which the ED registered a case under PMLA.
Manish Sisodia, then deputy chief minister of Delhi and head of the excise department, was arrested on charges of fraud and is currently in jail.
