Former Vancouver Canucks prospect and Surrey resident Prabhraj Rai has been charged with fraud following an investigation into his real estate investment arrangements.
A statement Wednesday from the Surrey RCMP Financial Crimes Unit (FCU) said Lai’s alleged fraud was “extensive.”
Lai is facing a civil lawsuit for allegedly defrauding real estate agents of more than $2.8 million in connection with real estate investments. However, police did not clearly link the incident to the lawsuit.
“On January 14, 2021, Surrey FCU announced an investigation into a fraud case spanning 2015 to 2021 after a victim came forward to police claiming to have lost millions of dollars in a real estate investment opportunity. started.
“Police have gathered information and evidence as part of a long-term investigation and have determined that a 34-year-old man is suspected of committing a major financial fraud between October 9, 2015 and July 20, 2018. ” Surrey RCMP said.
Rye’s alleged actions occurred after he ended his hockey career with the Evansville Icemen in 2014. Rye played in the Western Hockey League with the Seattle Thunderbirds and Prince George Cougars before being drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He never appeared in a game with the Canucks.
Police said Lai was arrested on November 21, but was conditionally released by the court pending his next court appearance.
Lai is innocent unless proven in court.
