Get ready for even more fun with Karate Kid.
Stars Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio announced on Tuesday (You can watch it here) They will reprise their roles in the new Best Kid movie. According to a Sony Pictures press release, the film is currently scheduled for release on December 13, 2024.
And although Chan and Macchio are back, they still need to find a new Karate Kid, and are starting a worldwide casting search to do so. Tuesday’s announcement included a call to action to submit audition videos for key roles.
Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the World) will direct the new film The Karate Kid from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, with Karen Rosenfelt (Twilight, Percy Jackson, Wears Prada) Produced by (known for “Devil”). . Plot details are currently being kept secret.
Best Kid Cinematic Universe
The first Karate Kid movie, of course, was released in 1984 and focused on Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso, who teaches Pat Morita’s character martial arts to protect himself from bullies. It was a huge hit, spawning three sequels and launching something like the Media His series, which continues to this day.
A remake of The Best Kid was released in 2010, with Chan returning and Jaden Smith starring as the trainee. Despite lukewarm reviews, it was a moderate success, grossing a solid $359 million worldwide.
But it’s the television series spin-off, Cobra Kai, that carries The Karate Kid into the modern era. Set several years after The Best Kid, William Zabka returns as bully Johnny Lawrence, re-examining the world of the series from his perspective as he reopens the Cobra Kai dojo. Macchio also appears in this series.
The much-loved show, which premiered on YouTube Red in 2018 and 2019, moved to Netflix for seasons 3-5. Development was paused over the summer amid the writers’ strike, but it was renewed for a sixth and final season.
It’s currently unknown when the sixth season of Cobra Kai will air, but at least we know there’s a lot of Karate Kid to come.
