Fighting games make great gifts, especially for the 2023 holiday season. There’s never been a better time to become a fan of this genre or start playing.
There’s no doubt that 2024 will see some blockbuster titles like Tekken 8 and Project L, but knowing the basics of one game will give you a big head start on several others. Masu.
We wanted to focus on games that are likely to still have an active fan base so that you can compete online.

There were a lot of other games I wanted to include but couldn’t justify, like the old BlazBlue titles. It’s definitely my favorite outside of Street Fighter Alpha 3.
Come holiday season 2023, many of these fighting games will be on sale or already affordable.
Which fighting game is the best gift for the 2023 holiday season?
1) Street Fighter 6
Of course, Street Fighter 6 will be on your gift list for the 2023 holiday season. My prediction is that this will probably be the best fighting game of the year, and it’s going to be a landslide.
It has a huge roster of great characters and fun DLC characters, and it also has a great PVE mode. You can create your own avatar and battle against online players in a very popular gameplay mode.
However, Street Fighter 6 needed to succeed. SF5 started off as a huge flop and took years to regain its reputation. If he were to buy a fighting game during the 2023 holiday season, it would be SF6.
2) Mortal Kombat 1
Do you like gruesome and violent deaths? Were you a fan of the previous MK games, or even the Injustice fighting games? If so, Mortal Kombat 1 is definitely for you. Personally, this is not one of my favorite series, but it was when I was a kid.
Is it strange that such an intense game would be held during the 2023 holiday season? of course not. This is a tightly controlled fighting game with great characters and equally disgusting finishing moves.
The cameo system is controversial, but I’m personally a big fan of how it strengthens and extends your combos.
3) Guilty Gear Strive
Guilty Gear: Strive is a lot of fighting games that I love but don’t like.
Strive has done a lot to up their game this year. With fun DLC characters and intense combat, I think there’s still a lot to love about this game. If I don’t plan on getting a new BlazBlue any time soon, other than Cross Tag Battles, I’m happy with Strive.
The visuals are top-notch and I always felt that each character had a unique vibe. Sure, they also feel like characters from previous ArcSys games, but that’s actually not a bad thing. If I were to pick one game from this list that I would find time to get better at, it would be this one of his 2023 holiday titles.
4) Melty Blood: Type Lumina
I’ve reviewed several Melty Blood titles over the years, and the latest installment, Type Lumina, feels just as intense as previous releases.
A heartwarming 2D anime fighter based on Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon. As far as I know, it was the best fighter of 2021.
This isn’t just a Type Moon fan service game, it’s a very well put together fighting game. Type-Moon Visual Fans of his novels and for some reason missed the fighter should catch up. Why not buy this for the 2023 holiday season?
5) Tekken 7
Tekken 7 may be a few years away, but Tekken 8 may be just around the corner. And that’s great. Despite this, Tekken 7 is still important to pick up.
The basics you learn as you improve in Tekken 7 will definitely carry over, so pick it up during the 2023 holiday season. Personally, I liked the guest characters more than the main characters.
Once I found out Akuma was coming to the game, I had no choice but to dive headfirst into Tekken 7. 3D Fighter is all about rhythm, and a wise man once told me that if you can play the rhythm game, you can become Tekken. . I don’t think he was wrong.
Get this one during the 2023 holiday season and be ready for a potential GOTY in 2024.
6) Skullgirls: 2nd Encore
If there’s one fighting game that gets ignored more than any other, and unfairly, it’s Skullgirls.
With its gorgeous 1930s art style, vibrant colors, and intense tag team gameplay, Skullgirls is one of the best fighters you’ll ever play. This is an affordable gift for him for the 2023 holiday season, and one worth giving.
Skullgirls: 2nd Encore, in particular, is an upgrade to the base game. All DLC characters (Squigly, Big Band, Eliza, Beowulf, and RoboFortune) will be given players the Skullgirls Mobile/Switch color palette, which provides at least 27 colors for each character.
If you’re skipping this title because it’s cheap, don’t equate it to the strength of the gameplay. Skullgirls is amazing. Go play Skullgirls.
7) Dragon Ball Fighters
I was hesitant to include Dragon Ball FighterZ on this list, but I won’t lie. However, not for the reasons you might think.
The balance patch is horribly out of control, but I think that’s a good thing for the game. It felt pretty stale for a while, but I think the updates have made the game exciting again.
Even if it’s not a perfect game, it’s a beautiful vision of what a Dragon Ball fighting game can be. The character’s moveset reflects the anime and manga in a way no other fighting game does.
My guess is that the only problem this game has is that there’s too much Goku. There are a lot of Saiyan/Saiyan fusion characters. I think the developers forgot that this series features characters other than Goku and Vegeta.
As far as gift ideas for the 2023 holiday season go, I stand by Dragon Ball FighterZ as one of the best fighting games to buy. It’s still a lot of fun for fans of the Akira Toriyama series.
Other fighting games could easily make this list, and we’ll likely see more updates as the 2023 holiday season approaches. But 2023 was arguably one of the best years for fighting games in a long time. This is a trend that we hope will continue.
