The major restoration of the central block of Parliament House has completed the demolition, primary excavation and abatement phases and is almost ready to begin the rebuilding phase.
The renovations are estimated to cost between $4.5 billion and $5 billion and will also include a brand new visitor center.
Workers are currently installing hundreds of steel columns to support the building until renovations are complete.
More precise excavations have begun to dig out the rock and soil around the Peace Tower’s foundation to pave the way for the future visitor center.
All heritage items have been removed from the building for storage and necessary restoration work.
Once construction is complete in 2030 or 2031, the new center block is expected to become a fully accessible parliament, with a new IT backbone behind the familiar traditional façade.
