Former British Columbia Premier John Horgan has died at the age of 65, CBC News has confirmed.
In June of this year, Hogan told CBC that she was diagnosed with cancer for the third time during a routine check-up for a previous throat cancer.
Hogan had left his post as Canada’s ambassador to Germany at the time.
He is survived by his wife, Ellie, and two sons.
in Statement posted by Hogan Press Secretary Sheena McConnell to XHogan’s family announced that he passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.
“Our hearts are broken to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, John Horgan,” the statement read.
“The well-being of British Columbia and its people was everything to him.
“Live long and prosper,” the statement concludes with a nod to Hogan’s love. Star Trek.
Born and raised in victoriaHorgan was first elected to the BC Legislature in 2005.
He was elected to lead B.C. in 2017 and held the province’s top job until announcing his resignation in 2022 amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He cited health and lack of energy as the main reasons.
Hogan left his MLA seat the following spring.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Mr. Hogan as Canada’s ambassador to Germany in November 2023.
The former prime minister was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2008 and was declared cancer-free after surgery and treatment.
Hogan was diagnosed with cancer again at the end of 2021 when a mass was discovered in his throat.
I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this year.
“This is the third time I have had cancer, but I have confidence and hope that I can live long and prosper again,” he said in a statement in June.
