As Americans prepare to elect their next president on Tuesday, new data from the Angus Reid Institute shows which federalist leader, Donald Trump or Kamala Harris, Canadians are most likely to deal with. This suggests that they have different views on suitability.
According to online survey A paper released Monday found that more Canadians think Conservative leader Pierre Poièvre would be most able to work with Trump, while a slight majority believe Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and current U.S. vice president I believe that the relationship will become stronger.
In terms of numbers
If Trump is elected:
- 38% think Poilievre is better
- 25% said neither Mr. Poilievre nor Mr. Trudeau would seek the job.
- 23% think Prime Minister Trudeau is better
- 14% answered “I don’t know/can’t say”
If Harris is elected:
- 37% think Prime Minister Trudeau is better
- 30% think Poilievre is better
- 18% said neither Mr. Poièvre nor Mr. Trudeau would seek the job.
- 15% answered “I don’t know/can’t say”
The poll found wide differences in results within regions of the country. Residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba thought Poièvre was the best person to deal with both Trump and Harris, while Ontario and the Atlantic provinces thought the Conservative leader was the best person to deal with Trump. I thought it was the perfect thing to do.
Meanwhile, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces believed Trudeau would praise Harris’ tenure as president.
A majority of Quebecers believed that neither Mr. Poièvre nor Mr. Trudeau could work with Mr. Trump.
The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey over three days, October 24th to 26th, among a random representative of 1,627 members of the Angus Reid Forum (all Canadian adults). The Angus Reid Institute says its independently commissioned and funded studies have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points 19 out of 20 times.
