American pop star Lizzo won’t be stepping back from the spotlight anytime soon, she assured fans in a social media post.
The Grammy Award winner wrote last week that she was tired of being targeted online for her appearance and personality and had “quit.”
However, she clarified in her new video, “When I say ‘quit,’ I mean I stopped focusing on negative energy.”
The pop star has built a reputation for body positivity, but has been accused of fattening one of her dancers.
The singer, whose real name is Melissa Vivian Jefferson, similarly rejected claims filed last year by former dancers who accused her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.
In a March 30 Instagram post titled “I Quit,” she said she was “tired of putting up with being dragged down by everyone in life and on the internet.”
The message came days after she performed in New York City in front of a sold-out crowd and three U.S. presidents.
Lawyers representing Lizzo’s former dancers have criticized the decision to have Lizzo headline the event amid a flurry of accusations against her.
In a new video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, Lizzo sought to set the record straight.
“What I’m not going to quit is the joy in life of making music and connecting with people, because I know I’m not alone,” she said.
“I am not alone in experiencing negative voices that seem louder than positive voices in any way.”
