Wayne Gretzky will be among the celebrities who will honor former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney at his state funeral on March 23, government officials announced Friday.
Mr Mulroney’s daughter Caroline will also speak, as well as Canadian media mogul Pierre Karl Péladeau, former Quebec Premier Jean Charest and former US Secretary of State James Baker, who will address the funeral via video link. .
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to give an “address” to those gathered at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Montreal at 11 a.m. Saturday, officials said. Only those invited will be allowed to enter the cathedral.
The funeral will include prayers, readings, hymns, and a reception of Holy Communion by Christian Lépine, Archbishop of Montreal, and Miguel Castellanos, Chaplain of Notre Dame Cathedral.
At Friday’s press conference, Canadian Heritage officials also said musical interludes during the funeral will be provided by members of the Orchester Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) and the OSM Choir.
Many other musicians are also scheduled to perform, including the Tenors vocal group, Marc Hervieux, Marie-Josée Lord, and Mulroney’s granddaughter Elizabeth Theodora Lapham.
Before the ceremony, the funeral procession, accompanied by RCMP and Canadian Armed Forces escort, honor guard and Royal Canadian Air Force Band, will travel from St. Patrick’s Cathedral to Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal.
Guests will include family, friends, current and former government representatives and dignitaries, and representatives of organizations with close ties to Mulroney.
The ceremony concludes with a 19-gun salute from the Clock Tower Pier in Montreal’s Old Port.
