First of all, why volunteer?
- Volunteer work helps build transferable skills such as leadership, collaboration, teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- The volunteer position is resume, It helps you gain practical experience, especially if you don’t have much paid work experience yet.
- Volunteering is a great way for international students to gain experience in Canada and demonstrate their familiarity with Canadian work culture.

Questions to ask yourself before becoming a volunteer
- What are your interests? What is important to you?
- What skills can you bring to the role? What skills would you like to have?
- What do you want to achieve through volunteering? what are your goals? Want to meet new people? Try something new? Will it help make a difference?
- How much time do you have? How flexible is your schedule? Do you want an ongoing volunteer role, a short-term role, or a one-off assignment or event?
Questions to ask an organization before becoming a volunteer
- What is expected of volunteers? Is there any training?
- What tasks will you perform? Alone or as part of a team?
- Are there any associated costs? If so, will they be refunded?
- How much time do I need?
Worried about networking at volunteer fairs? Try these pro tips
- Research the organization you’re interested in ahead of time so you can prepare your questions in advance.
- Prepare an “elevator pitch” to introduce yourself.
- Listen carefully, ask questions that show interest, and bring a notebook or use your cell phone to take notes.
