“We couldn’t stay here”: California family life after evacuation
Shortly after the fire broke out in Los Angeles, Bethany Martinez and her daughter lost power and heat and were evacuated from their home on the Altadena-Pasadena border. They are waiting until they feel safe enough to return.
“They’re eating here. We’re staying in an Airbnb right now. They’re going back and forth to get food and water and stuff. Really, they’re coming to get hot meals, they’re coming to eat. A lot of what’s helped is the donations and supplies that these people have given us. They’re also going to have a wildfire relief night, and they’re going to do something at another location called Altadena Girls. I’m giving you a present.” “Without school, I don’t really have much to do. But when I go out with my mom and my aunts and cousins, they fill up my schedule. I have to do math and I can’t play all the time. I don’t really like school, but I love going to school and playing with my friends.I know there will be a fire someday. However, I never expected that it would turn out like this, with houses destroyed and things cut off everywhere the fire broke out.And yes, people were left homeless. , and not being able to go home to get what they need.” I never thought that would happen in our neighborhood, Altadena. It doesn’t look the same anymore. It can’t be the same anymore. ”
