Former U.S. President Donald Trump repeated unfounded claims about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s parentage in an interview on Monday, suggesting that the prime minister “may” be the son of former Cuban President Fidel Castro.
The current Republican presidential candidate sat down for an interview with streamer Adyn Ross, where he was asked to react to photos of various U.S. and world leaders.
When shown a photo of the Prime Minister, Trump was quick to resort to conspiracy theories, citing an unnamed “they” as his source of information.
“They say he’s Fidel Castro’s son, and that could be it. Anything is possible in this world,” Trump said.
Trudeau was born on Dec. 25, 1971, the daughter of the late Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife, Margaret Trudeau, more than four years before her highly publicized first visit to Cuba and meeting with Castro.
The conspiracy theory was widely shared on social media after Trudeau sparked outrage after Castro’s death in 2016 when he praised the late Cuban leader.
US media have reported that the interview with Ross was an attempt by Trump to appeal to younger voters. At the start of the interview, Trump said his 18-year-old son, Barron, was a “huge fan” of the US-based streamer.
Ross has over 4 million subscribers on YouTube and over 1 million subscribers on Kick, according to figures published on those platforms.
Trump said he gets on “very well” with Trudeau, but suggested he doesn’t agree with some of his policies.
“He seems to be moving in a very progressive direction, and Canadians don’t like it,” he said.
Trump also suggested a Conservative candidate could win the next election, but appeared unaware of Conservative Leader Pierre Poirierbvre, who is leading the Trudeau Liberals in recent opinion polls.
“If they have a good conservative — they may or may not, I don’t know — but a strong conservative will win in Canada,” Trump said.
In addition to Prime Minister Trudeau, President Trump also responded to photos of Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump described Xi as a “strong” man and said he had a “great relationship” with the Chinese president, while adding that he had a “really good relationship” with Kim Jong Un.
